Welcome to Barnrat Media!

Horses used to be my life. I started taking riding lessons when I was 9 years old. By the time I was 12, I had my own horse and wanted to spend every waking moment (and a few sleeping ones) at the barn.

When I graduated high school, I took a year off before college to ride and train. Eventing was my discipline, and I was fortunate enough to work with a top trainer for a few years.

I then had an opportunity to go to England, the mecca of all things 3-Day. I ended up working for showjumpers, a job I totally LOVED even though it wasn’t my discipline of choice.

After that I did some traveling before returning home. I ended up getting married about a year later, and there was no money to indulge my horse habit. So when I started having kids I gave away all of my riding gear, convinced that chapter of my life was over for good.

Twelve years passed without me spending any time in the saddle. Then, in August of 2012, one of my old trainers took pity on me and offered to let me revert to my 11-year-old barnrat self ride some of their horses.

I still have my first horse Skipper, and he’s 31 years old now. He isn’t sound enough to ride and hasn’t been for years. But he’s a character and everybody out at the farm loves him. I keep him at a boarding facility that’s home to a variety of horses. There are quite a few eventers, some dressage horses, pleasure/trail horses, a couple of showjumpers, a clydesdale, a percheron, and even an older guy whose owner successfully competed in Cowboy Mounted Shooting. I’ll eventually get photos of them all posted here under that Meet the Horses tab in the top menu. But it will take a while.

I was previously sharing pictures, animated GIF files, and videos via my already existing social media accounts, but I decided it would be better to create a dedicated place for posting horse stuff. So Barnrat Media was born.
